We hope you will join us for The Power of Poetry: A free, fun workshop for youth ages 11-18. This is made available through The MONARCH TRAIN, advancing literacy and music education in North Idaho.
Did you know that poetry changes things? It changes the person who writes the poem, the one who reads it, and potentially the whole world! As a young person, you have a lot going on in your mind– many insights, questions, and ideas. Poetry is a great way to explore, to heal, and to express your hopes and fears.
In this workshop, you’ll learn about different forms of poetry and you’ll write a lot and get a chance to share your work aloud, if you want to (keeping it private is perfectly fine, too). The workshop will begin by exploring what poetry is (there’s many different ideas about that!) and we’ll watch some poets share their powerful poems. Then you’ll get to work practicing fun exercises like writing prompts and blackout poetry.
Snacks provided! Come discover the poet in you!! This workshop is open to all youth in our community.
This class will be taught by published poet Marie Marchand. Marie started writing poetry thirty years ago at the age of 16. She recently won a poetry contest in Bellingham, WA, where her poem appears on a city bus! She’s smart and fun, and loves to inspire young people to find their poet within!
If you are interested in joining us, please let us know by filling out this form, so that we have an idea of headcount. Thanks!
